New cave systems revealed near Halong Bay

Two large cave systems near Vietnam’s Unesco-recognised Halong Bay have been unveiled to the public, some three years after they were discovered by a local fisherman.

Among the features of the caves are numerous stalactites of different sizes, stone pillars, terracing, fossils, and chambers enclosed by cascading stalactites. Local man Nguyen Sy Binh came across the caves while herding goats in the area, and later received sponsorship from a tour company to construct pathways and fences at the caves. The Vietnam Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources has stated that Halong Bay management plans to conduct studies at the newly discovered grottoes and to make the most of their tourism potential.
