New 20mph speed limits –normally only applying in residential areas or close to schools – are to be extended across London and the rest of the country.
And motorists caught breaking this lowest limit face an increased risk of being nabbed on new speed cameras with resultant £100 fines and three points on their driving licence. It is a major shift in policy with a deliberate intention of reducing the speed Britons drive at.
The Mail Online reported that Boris Johnson, the London Mayor, announced that eight pilot schemes would be extended to Red Routes’ used by a third of the capital’s motorists. Several other cities including Birmingham and Edinburgh as well as many towns also intend to introduce the new limits.
The AA described the introduction as being driven more by dogma than road safety considerations. “These 20mph zones are popping up like spring daffodils,” added the spokesperson. Transport for London (TfL) claim the move will cut road casualties while simultaneously improving the quality of life for local residents.
