Mt Kinabalu summit trail reopens to climbers

The summit trail to Sabah’s Mount Kinabalu has reopened after six months with 135 climbers beginning their trek to Low’s Peak on Tuesday.

Sabah State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun, who flagged off the climbers at the Timpohon Gate at the base of Malaysia’s highest mountain, said the reopening of the trail, following the devastating 5 June earthquake that resulted in the death of 18 people, showed the ability of Sabahans’ to rise above a tragedy. In a move designed to support mountain guides, four of whom were killed in avalanches triggered by the earthquake, guiding fees have been increased from RM150 to RM230 while Sabah Parks will also provide them insurance coverage for death and injuries.
