A group of researchers are estimating that 5500 glaciers in the Hindu Kush-Himalayan region – the site of Mount Everest – will drastically retreat or completely disappear over the next century due to climate change. The team of scientists concluded that the glaciers could reduce volume by 70-99% by 2100. Over one billion people living in Asia could be greatly affected as the disappearance of the glaciers would have dire consequences for farming and hydropower generation downstream.
