Montreal pub reprimanded for non-French sticker

The owner of a Montreal pub says he has received a letter from Quebec’s French-language watchdog reprimanding him for placing an English-only TripAdvisor sticker in his window.

Quebec’s language laws establish French as the official language of the province and require commercial signage to predominantly display French. The sticker on display at the Burgundy Lion Pub says in English that the business has been recommended by users of TripAdvisor. A spokesperson from the Office Quebecois de la Langue Francaise (OQLF) says the letters, which were sent to 300 other establishments, were only to remind business owners that the stickers were also available in French.
