Miami has opened a new art museum and it’s free in for everyone

Art-lovers will appreciate the news that Miami has just become home to a new art museum and admission is free for everyone. Designed by Madrid-based Aranguren + Gallegos Arquitectos, the newly-built Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) is the newest attraction in Miami’s Design District, and its gallery space will stretch across three floors and spans 20,000 square feet.

The really appealing aspect is that entry to the privately funded and run museum is free for all, as part of its commitment to making art accessible to all. Tickets must be reserved online in advance, however, and the museum will also host free public programmes to introduce the public to its permanent art collection and exhibits. It aims to promote continuous experimentation in contemporary art, fostering the exchange of art and ideas throughout the Miami region and internationally.

While the top two floors will house temporary exhibitions, the ground floor is where the galleries for the permanent collection can be found, as well as long-term loans and a space for emerging artists. There will be a great opportunity for visitors to enjoy new artworks, as 60% of the work shown in exhibitions will be from artists showing in the US for the first time. There is no café or restaurant area, as the owners hope visitors will tour the nearby blocks and Design District scene, but there is a 15,000-square-foot sculpture garden for them to enjoy outside the building.

The inaugural show at the museum, “The Everywhere Studio,” mixes works from modern masters like Pablo Picasso, Yves Klein and Roy Lichtenstein with works by contemporary artists. Encompassing 100 works in painting, sculpture, video, and installation, it brings together over 50 artists from the past five decades.

ICA Miami opens Tuesday through Saturday from 11am to 8pm and on Sundays from noon to 6pm. Check out its website here.
