The Pope might be leader of a two-thousand-year-old religion but it’s 21st-century technology that will welcome him to Mexico when he arrives on his visit this Friday.

Organisers hope that well-wishers will use their mobile phones to illuminate the 19km drive from Mexico City’s airport to the papal residence creating a “wall of light and prayer”. Although the committee in charge of the event say they are currently around 22,000 people short of the required number, they are confident that, come Friday, the crowds will be out and even suggest that there’ll be enough people to form a double line and break the world record for people using their phones as lights.
