That eagerly anticipated road trip is approaching. The playlist is made, the accommodation is booked and you’re ready to hit the open road. But why take your own familiar car when you can easily rent a stunning, vintage collectible with the touch of a button? That’s the premise behind DriveShare, a website that has been described as the Airbnb of vehicles, as it connects US car owners with prospective renters in a quick and straightforward way.
The only site of its kind in the America, DriveShare allows owners to rent their cars to pre-screened, qualified drivers, with the website also providing insurance and roadside service. Created by Hagerty Insurance Agency, it allows enthusiasts to get behind the wheels of a variety of beautiful, fun and unique vehicles, while also aiming to provide a way for owners to offset the price of maintaining their cars. Users can browse the site for makes and models of a range of cars across the country, with information on the daily rate, availability, the security deposit fee and the policies of the owners. Just like Airbnb, users can leave reviews for renters, and renters can list the features of each car, such as navigation, stereo system and storage.
“Road trips are about the journey and not just the destination. If your road trip includes driving a unique and fun car – especially on the backroads away from the interstate, you will come away with a much deeper experience,” said Jonathan Klinger, Vice President of Public Relations at Hagerty.
The concept was founded in 2014, but it was only in late 2017 that the site was rebranded and launched as DriveShare by Hagerty, and since then, Jonathan says the demand has been huge. “The reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. The interest in driving a fun or unique vehicle is far greater than the amount of people who own them. DriveShare users like the idea of being able to enjoy a chance to drive interesting vehicles without committing to full ownership,” he said.
DriveShare also said that the platform has resulted in positive relationships and friendships between its users, and in some cases, owners have helped renters source similar cars to their own for purchase.
