Extended holiday weekends in Sri Lanka have seen vast crowds on the trails climbing up to the summit of Adam’s Peak Sri Pada), the 2243m-high mountain revered by Sri Lankan Hindus, Buddhists, Christians and Muslims.

The sacred footprint at the top of the peak is attributed to Buddha by Buddhists, to Shiva by Hindus and to the Biblical Adam by Christians and Muslims. During the pilgrimage season, millions of devotees make the ascent to the summit, but the crowds are particularly heavy this year because key religious holidays are falling straight after weekends. Supplies of food and water are reportedly running low on some sections of the route because of the volume of pilgrims. Read more: sundaytimes.lk
