The London Eye, Europe’s largest ferris wheel, is celebrating its 15th birthday.
Although originally due to open in December 1999 ahead of the new millennium, it didn’t actually get going until March 2000 because of technical difficulties, ITV London reports.
The major tourist attraction had a ‘tattoo’ to celebrate its big day, which was designed by ‘artist in residence’ Jamie Cullen, reports This Is Local London. London’s Mayor said the word ‘iconic’ was bandied about too easily but it fitted in the London Eye’s case.
The wheel was expected initially to be a temporary addition to the city’s skyline but has become a fixture for Londoners and tourists alike.
