Three thousand London buses will fill up with fuel made from meat from next March, according to the city’s transport bosses.
In just over two months time 3000 of the 8900 bus fleet will use extracts from the meat industry by blending it with B20 green diesel.
The Evening Standard reports that cooking oil and animal fat will be among the matter churned into the fuel.
Over 640 buses have been running on the modified fuel in a trial two month period.
Matthew Pencharz, the deputy mayor for environment and energy said the bonus from this new development would see carbon emissions slashed while using fuels that normally are thrown down the capital’s drains.
He said that London could be proud of now having the greenest bus fleet on the planet and added that the city would continue to pursue green options by creating green jobs and using biodiesel with self-sufficiency benefits.
Mike Weston, TfL’s buses director, pointed out that the latest improvements would lead to a reduction of CO2 emissions by 21,000 tonnes each year. A bonus was there was no extra money needed for this development.
