Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio has unveiled plans to build an eco-resort on an uninhabited Belizean island that has suffered from overfishing and deforestation. DiCaprio, who is a well-known environmental activist, bought the caye with an investment partner several years ago and has said his main focus is to ‘do something that will change the world’. The resort, due to open in 2018, will be called ‘Blackadore Caye, a Restorative Island’ and include all the trappings of a luxury resort, but with conservation features such as artificial reefs, a plant nursery to support a manatee conservation area and mangrove trees that will be replanted to replace invasive species. Blackadore Caye is a 45-minute boat ride from Belize City’s international airport. Read more: nytimes.com
