Japan’s most famous castle reopens following five-year renovation work

Japan’s Himeji Castle (Himeji-jō), a Unesco heritage site and widely considered the country’s best castle, is set to be reopened following the completion of restoration work that has taken more than five years. Work at the castle has meant that parts of the popular tourist site have been closed to the public and the oft-photographed facade covered in scaffolding. Himeji is one of only a few ‘original’ castle examples remaining in Japan. Local authorities expect 1.8 million visitors at the castle this year. Read more: japantimes.co.jp
