Tokyo and Osaka cities are set to trial cheaper taxi fares for short trips, with an eye to making the service more attractive to tourists and the elderly.
Full details have yet to be finalised, but the trial plans to lower the current base fares, which in Tokyo, are higher than in other major cities such as London and New York. According to the transport ministry, the new taxi rate system will be put in place from April this year.
