A new study released by the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies shows that frequent holidaying can decrease chances of heart disease and depression, whilst also improving the overall health of the brain. The study particularly stressed the positive effect of travel on older generations, encouraging people to travel as they grow older, recommending it as a way to stay active and mentally stimulated.

In a surprising bit of research, the study showed that not taking an annual holiday increased the chances of death by 20% in men, and increased chances of heart disease by 30%! As for women, the study proved that women who vacationed once in six years were at significantly higher risk of a heart attack when compared with women who vacationed at least twice a year.

According to the study the benefits of travel included physical activity, mental activity, and as a way to unplug and de-stress from work and allow the body to recuperate, which if omitted is known to increase chances of heart disease. So if you’re doubting whether you can afford another holiday this year, think again. Your health is your wealth after all.
