It’s now easier and cheaper for US citizens to get to Brazil with the introduction of a new e-visa scheme that reduces the price and wait times for the form.
The new system has just gone into place for Americans, and is already available to Australian, Japanese and Canadian travellers for 90-day stays. The move makes it cheaper and easier for US citizens to get the necessary visa for their trip to the South American country. Previously, prospective travellers had to visit an embassy or consulate to get one – which isn’t always easy for people living outside of large city centres.
There’s also the added bonus that the new e-visa costs only $40 – much cheaper than the $160 it cost for the traditional visa process. The processing times are about 10 business days, but if you want an expedited visa, you can pay $134.50 to get it in four business days.
The four countries that can now use the system were chosen because they make up more than half of visa applications to Brazil. It’s hoped that making the process simpler will increase tourism, as the country has seen a slump in visitor numbers in recent years.
Anyone applying for the new e-visas will need a valid passport, a passport photo, a valid e-mail address and other necessary documentation. Applicants will then be able to fill out a form, which will take about 20 minutes, before the fee is paid. The new process is expected to expand to citizens of more countries in the future.
