A €4 million greenway in Ireland’s tourism epicentre could become one of the world’s iconic walking and cycling routes after it was given the go ahead this week, despite opposition from some local farmers.
Most of the affected 120 Kerry landowners have already agreed to the sale of their parcels of land along the route but some were resisting. They will now be served with compulsory purchase orders after Kerry County Council voted not to delay the process for further negotiations.
Kerry county manager Moira Murrell this week issued a rallying call, asking that the investment is not lost by further delays to the project which links to the famed Ring of Kerry and embraces Kells Bay and the Gleesk Viaduct.
The exciting new route contains over 30km and includes 5km of innovative ‘marine greenway’ the Irish Examiner reports. This will see cyclists being ferried by boat between Renard point and Valentia Island.
