Although demand for domestic flights has increased in South Africa over the past year, the cost of tickets has dropped by as much as 39% during that time frame. Increased competition is cited as the primary cause, with the newcomer FlySafair operating on the ten routes that have experienced the greatest price reductions. It’s thought the recent entry of the airline Skywise will bring prices down further. Researchers note, however, that low-price launches are a common ploy for new airlines to gain market share, and that the current rate of reductions may not be sustainable in the long term.
