Jakarta is set to loan a pair of orangutans from South Jakarta’s Ragunan Zoo to its sister city, Pyongyang. Prohibited to trade under Indonesian law, the orangutans will reportedly be lent to a North Korean zoo until they breed, and their offspring are old enough to survive on their own, after which the parents will be returned to Indonesia. Given female orangutans typically give birth once every eight years, and offspring have the longest dependence on the mother of any animal in the world, the two apes face a long trip away from their homeland.
