The tiny village of Johri in Uttar Pradesh was put on the sporting map by two gun-toting grandmothers, Prakashi and Chandro Tomar. Despite coming from a deeply traditional community, the elderly women ignored gender traditions and starting shooting at the local shooting range in the 1990s, setting a role model for many other village women. Since then, Johri has sent 30 shooters to the Indian Olympic shooting team, and the success of its women sharpshooters has played a significant role in changing gender perceptions in this highly traditional part of the country.
