China is an exhilarating, busy country and exploring it can be tiring work, but if you fancy a nap the next time you’re there, you can now check in to one of the country’s three new ‘sleep-sharing’ capsule hotels.

Capsule hotels have been a staple of Japanese travel for several years, and now a group called Xiangshui Space has recently opened in Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu. The company plans to extend to cities such as Qingdao, Nanjing and Shenzhen by the end of the summer. They are hoping to appeal to professionals seeking a nice private place to nap and, of course, weary travellers looking to catch a bit of shut-eye. They are different to Japan’s capsule hotels, because they are aimed at those looking for a quick snooze, rather than a full overnight stay.

Booking is done via an easy phone scan, and for just ten yuan ($1.50) for half an hour at peak times from 11am to 2pm, sleepy customers can book a nap in a sleek white capsule that has been designed to look like a space pod. The charge is 0.2 yuan per minute after the first half hour, and the rate drops to only six yuan at other, less busy, times. The capsule hotel is the latest example of China’s booming sharing economy sector, which includes car ride, bike and even umbrella sharing.

So the next time you’re in China and fancy a power nap to keep your energy levels up, all you have to do is head along to one of these new capsule hotels and you’ll be sorted.
