At least 20 people have died after being electrocuted on a carnival float during Haiti’s annual party celebrations in the capital of Port-au-Prince today. The accident occurred when a stray power line fell onto the float, which was sponsored by the Haitian hip-hop group Barikad Crew. Thousands of people flock to Haiti’s raucous carnival each year and the scene caused chaos as those on the float and nearby fled in panic upon seeing the electrical sparks. Local reports suggest the power line fell when someone on the float used a pole or stick to move the cable so that the float could pass under.
