Guests at this Bora Bora resort watch the sunset from a solar-powered yacht

If laying on the deck in stunning overwater bungalows that overlook the crystal clear ocean wasn’t enough, a coastal resort in Bora Bora has unveiled a futuristic, silent solar-powered yacht designed to transport guests across the water in style.

Called the Okeanos Pearl, the vessel is currently in operation at the Bora Bora Pearl Beach Resort on the island of Motu Tevairoa, and is available for use for a special golden hour cruise that sees guests setting off on the water with wine, beer and soft drinks on-board in order to watch the sunset. The electric catamaran also takes guests on a noise-free tour of the picturesque lagoon during the day.

Created by Soel Yachts, the boat was welcomed to the resort as part of a sustainable programme supported by the Ministers of French Polynesia in an effort to cut down on pollution and to offer a green alternative to guests. “We got the idea for the solar electric boat when we travelled to French Polynesia and saw how the conventional daily boat traffic ruins the perfect holiday in paradise, continuously leaving emissions and disturbing sounds behind,” Linda Brembs, managing partner at Soel Yachts told Lonely Planet Travel News. Following the success of the boat being integrated into daily life at the resort, it is anticipated that more will be rolled out next year.

“Sometimes the resort takes guests to a remote motu, where the boat can be beached on the sand bank. Guests have the possibility of going in the water, having a party on the boat or a BBQ on the beach,” Linda said.

As well as its overwater bungalows and the Okeanos Pearl, Bora Bora Pearl Beach also features garden pool villas and beach suites with jacuzzis that offer views of Mount Otemanu. A total of 80 rooms and villas are available, while visitors who love the water also have the option of making use of paddle boards, kayaks, outrigger canoes and snorkelling equipment.
