In light of the conference on climate change taking place in Paris and the resulting conversation on sustainability, local conservation initiatives like those in Central America are receiving global attention.
The charity Maya Pedal, based in San Andres Itzapa, Guatemala, has been converting old bicycles into “bicimaquinas,” pedal powered machines that help with daily tasks that normally require electricity. The machines can wash clothes, blend food, and even mix shampoo, and have provided new opportunities for families with limited resources as well as local businesses.
