Officials in Berlin have been forced to construct a fence alongside the East Side Gallery while they carry out restoration to remove what’s been described as ‘an unbelievable amount of vandalism’ to the artworks.

More than 100 colourful murals adorn the East Side Gallery, many of which were created 25 years ago after reunification, when artists from around the world were invited to paint on the preserved area of the fallen Berlin Wall. But teams employed by the city are currently trying to remove traces of vandalism such as scratches and names scribbled by tourists. While the fence is intended to be temporary during the restoration work, officials have indicated that they are looking to find a more permanent solution to prevent vandalism. Read more: thelocal.de
