Efforts to preserve the endangered foxes on a chain of Californian islands seem to have paid off.

The foxes are native to some of the Channel Islands, just off the coast of Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, but numbers had been in serious decline for decades due to introduced predators and diseases. Now though, the battle to save them, which included a campaign of disease control and predator removal, has paid off and federal wildlife officials are ready to take them off the endangered list.
