London City Airport (LCA) is to undergo a £200 million expansion project which is expected to last into the late 2020s. The work will see the number of annual flights jump substantially from the present level of 70,000 to 111,000 – an increase of 41,000.
These flights into the heart of the city will both help to ease the congestion problems on other London airports while serving the large business numbers who travel to and from the city on a daily basis.
Travel Pulse reports that boosting the capacity of runways will lead to more peak-time take-offs and landings. The work will also prepare the airport for the future which will have to be less noisy for residents and more fuel efficient for the travel industry.
The LCA development will culminate in 2023 when it has seven new aircraft stands that will see it welcome six million passengers through its doors on an annual basis.
