Welsh rugby fans heading for Rome for their country’s Six Nations match with Italy have been warned of possible flight disruption due to a strike by Italian air traffic controllers.

The strike is planned for tomorrow when planeloads of supporters are due to take charter flights from Cardiff airport to Rome for Saturday’s match.

Cardiff airport bosses have advised passengers to check flight details with their airline “to ensure they are aware of any potential disruption and/or changes to their flight schedule”.

The airport advice continues: “Unless advised otherwise by the airline, please check in as normal.”

An airport spokeswoman said: “We have a number of charter flights leaving Cardiff on Friday for Rome. Airlines are looking at possibly moving their flights to the hours before the strike starts.”

Jim Strachan, of Strachan Sports Travel, told WalesOnline that some flights were being brought forward to as early as 5.30am tomorrow to avoid the strike.

A spokesman for British Airways said: “We are aware of the situation and making arrangements to limit the effect of the strike on our customers.

“We have introduced a flexible booking policy for anybody already scheduled to fly tomorrow, allowing them to rebook up until March 26. We will publish any changes to our Friday schedule on ba.com later today.”
