The burgeoning popularity of a series of novels written by an anonymous author under the pseudonym Elena Ferrante has turned the city of Naples into a tourism hotspot.

The gritty southern Italian city, most famous as the birthplace of pizza and for its mafia connections, is the setting for four novels that trace the lives of two young women growing up in a working class neighbourhood. The books were translated into English last year, and so far the first in the series, My Brilliant Friend, has sold 800,000 copies in the US and 300,000 in the UK. An Italian TV series is in the pipeline, and shops and restaurants in the city are now emphasising their connections with the stories, keen to attract visitors inspired by the novels.
