Earthquake hits off Alaska but no tsunami threat

A strong earthquake has struck in a remote region off the coast of Alaska and officials said there is no tsunami threat or immediate report of damage.

The US Geological Survey said the magnitude-6.7 quake was centred in the ocean about 35 miles (56km) beneath the seabed and some 400 miles (644km) south-west of Anchorage – a remote and lightly populated Aleutian Island region.

Officials said the temblor was felt on the Alaska Peninsula and Kodiak Island, more than 100 miles (160km) away, but there were no immediate reports of damage.

The National Tsunami Warning Centre said there is no danger of a tsunami.
