Dublin Spire beaming as it returns from darkness for St Patrick’s Day

The lights will go in spectacular fashion on Dublin’s Spire in time to celebrate St Patrick’s Day.

A dozen massive coloured beams are now trained on the 120-metre high beacon as part of the celebrations for Ireland‘s patron saint.

The lights – the equivalent of 10,000 watts each – are part of a show each night which also includes a 14-metre video wall wrapped around the central landmark on the city’s O’Connell Street which allows people to live tweet onto it.

The Belfast Telegraph reports that the official hashtag is #lightirl but unofficially the #relightmyspire can also be used.

The bright end follows a year in which the torch has not worked on the Monument of Light. The moves to relight it was to coincide with both the United Nations Year of Light and St Patrick’s Day.

One of the organisers Matthew Cregan, promised that the show will be a “spectacle like never seen before on O’Connell Street.”

The lighting extravaganza will take place from 6pm to midnight each evening until Wednesday, 18th.

Dublin Grand Marshal Brendan O’Carroll officially turned on the lights the Spire in full green – the first time it has been seen in that colour.
