Derelict Liverpool housing scheme wins Turner Prize

The Turner Prize, Britain’s leading award for modern art, has been given to a regeneration scheme for derelict houses in Liverpool.

The prize is known for its controversial entries – past winners have included a shed sailing down a river, a painting featuring elephant dung and an empty room whose lights periodically turned on and off. This year’s winners, the architecture and design collective Assemble, have overhauled 10 houses in Toxteth, Liverpool, creating innovative interiors using reclaimed objects. Some commentators have complained that the project should not have won, with author Muriel Gray saying ‘I think it’s changed the nature of the Turner Prize because I don’t think it is modern art.’ Read more: bbc.co.uk
