Cuban state telecom company Etecsa has announced a new initiative to provide residential internet service in Havana, where the company also plans to install 30 new public Wi-Fi areas in 2016.

The test is to be conducted in La Habana Vieja, the capital’s historic district, and will be run via fiber-optic cables. Currently the Cuban government limits at-home internet access to members of certain professions such as medicine, academia and journalism; the new public Wi-Fi spots will raise the total internet access points in the city to 47.
