Buzzy pop-up and boba tea stars have launched a new café at the Asian Art Museum

Food-loving travellers in San Francisco can now combine a snack with some culture at a new café at the Asian Art Museum. 

The café, called Sunday at the Museum, will serve up dishes like miso avocado toast on Japanese milk bread, a Korean fried chicken sandwich, and plenty of types of tea. It’s a collaboration between chef Deuki Hong, who runs the San Francisco pop-up Sunday Bird and is known for showcasing Asian American cuisine, and Andrew Chau and Bin Chen of the popular spot Boba Guys.

As the museum undergoes a transformation project, the new opening is sure to pique the interest of foodies, combining the talents of two popular San Francisco spots. Hong explained in a statement that the team is excited to be a part of the transformation and “rethinking how food and beverage can augment visual experiences in the galleries with the tastes and smells of Asia … Like the museum, we want to be a platform for talking about Asian culture.”

Chau and Chen will take care of beverages – a good call as the pair are well-known for their milk teas at Boba Guys. Sunday has a menu featuring cold-brewed and espresso-based coffees, as well as classic, Hong Kong, and jasmine milk teas, a green matcha latte and a selection of teas by the pot. Later this year, they plan to offer a sommelier-style tea service for those who want to learn more about the culture of Asian teas.

“A seat at Deuki’s table is, like a visit to our museum, a true cultural experience, one that weaves together history, memory, geography and flavour to touch all of your senses,” said Jay Xu, the CEO and Asian Art Museum Director.

Despite its name, Sunday will be open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm and doesn’t require museum admission – however, it’s probably worth stopping in to check out one of the largest collections of Asian art in the world.
