Belize is abuzz as its citizens prepare for the widely celebrated Garifuna Settlement Day, a 24-hour party kicking off on 19 November that commemorates the Garifuna people’s arrival on the Belize coast after being exiled from the Grenadines by the British in 1802.

The anniversary is marked by an extravagant re-enactment of the landing as well as dancing, live music, drum demonstrations, parades, and a Miss Garifuna pageant. While the event is celebrated nation-wide, the biggest party takes place in Dangriga, the town at the heart of the Garifuna culture.
