Belfast will feature on a global edition of the board game Monopoly after it was voted in the top 10 most popular destinations. The Northern Irish city beat competitors including London, New York and Tokyo.
Belfast will be placed on the red property spaces after it came ninth in a worldwide crowd-sourced competition marking Monopoly’s 80th birthday.
London, Moscow and Sydney are among other cities on the game.
Inga Norvilyte fronted the campaign to get Belfast on the board. She said: “I’m so proud to be part of it and can’t wait to play the new Monopoly: Here and Now game.
“A big thanks to everyone who voted and shared my love for this great city. Millions of people around the world will now be playing a Monopoly board with the city of Belfast on it.”
Belfast tourism has been boosted by attractions like the Titanic Belfast visitor centre where the doomed liner was built and programmes like the Game of Thrones series.
Taxi tours of wall paintings from the 30-year conflict have also proved popular with tourists.
For the first time Monopoly fans were invited to select their favourite cities and shape the latest edition of the board game.
Since February 13.4 million votes have been cast from 182 countries worldwide. The game will be available to the public in the autumn.
Players must visit as many locations as possible, where they will collect passport stamps along the journey. Competitors will collect cash from visitor fees when opponents land on their locations and the first player to fill their passport wins.
Ms Norvilyte added: “This is absolutely amazing for Belfast. I’m so proud to be part of it.”
Other cities on the board include: Lima; Hong Kong; Riga, Latvia; Lisbon, Istanbul, Warsaw, Mexico City, Santiago, Chile, Athens, Belgrade, Tokyo, New York, Amsterdam, Queenstown in New Zealand. Cape Town. Taipei in Taiwan; Giethoorn in the Netherlands and Madrid.
