It is thought to be a first in the history of Major League Baseball (MLB): on Wednesday the Baltimore Orioles played the Chicago White Sox in a stadium completely devoid of fans. ‘It’s definitely weird,’ said Orioles first baseman Chris Davis, ‘I’ll take any home run I can get at any time I can get it, but it’s definitely more fun when there are fans in the stands’. As the city of Baltimore continues to battle unrest on the streets following the death and funeral of Freddie Gray who died while in police custody, sports games are being cancelled due to the city not wanting to take security resources away from the streets. Instead of postponing all three MLB games of the series, last night’s match went ahead, but without any fans. The Orioles won the match 8-2, and were cheered by a small crowd outside the stadium.
