Perito Moreno glacier in Argentina began the process of its cyclical rupture this week.
The spectacular natural phenomenon involves the collapse of huge masses of ice and draws thousands of tourists to Los Glaciares National Park in the country’s southern province of Santa Cruz. The last rupture occurred in 2012, and they often happen around this time of year, the end of the austral summer. The glacier is located in the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, the world’s third-largest concentration of freshwater ice in the world.
