An artist is painting the world’s longest mural on the US-Mexico border wall

Enrique Chiu, an artist from Tijuana, is on an ambitious mission; to paint the longest mural in the world along the border wall that separates Mexico from the United States of America.

Aiming to spread messages of positivity, world peace and bridge building, the project has seen Enrique enlisting the help of over 2600 artistic volunteers from all over the world, who join him at weekends to paint. Sometimes Enrique creates outlines for people to fill in with colours that they choose. “So far we have painted two kilometres in Tijuana, half a kilometre in the city of Tecate and half a kilometre in Mexicali. I want to make a change in the world like many people, and I think I’m achieving it. Through art and the will of people, a social and cultural movement is being made that can fill people with positive feelings and send messages in this huge canvas we have. Every weekend people, friends, and artists keep arriving to achieve this union,” Enrique told Lonely Planet Travel News.

The project, called the Mural of Brotherhood, officially launched in December 2016. The murals have been designed to be vibrant and eye-catching, especially to people crossing the border by foot, and the project also includes a 15-metre high sculpture that is currently being worked on. The goal is to create a piece that covers over 18,000 square metres, which would see the project claiming the Guinness World Record for the longest mural in the world.

Enrique said that the next few months will see him dedicating his weekends to painting the façades in other border cities such as Ciudad Juarez, Naco City and Reynosa. Anyone that is interested in contributing to the project is welcome to do so, with Enrique’s only rule being that all images, tags and inscriptions must be positive and happy. “We all know that walls can divide, but on this occasion, it is uniting. The best thing is that people have faith and trust in me!” Enrique said.
