Ever find yourself getting increasingly frustrated as you queue for what seems like hours in airport security? It looks like you might never have to again with thanks to Amsterdam airport’s new pilot scheme. The new security system which is currently being trialled at the airport is inspired by Disneyland’s time slot system allowing passengers to potentially avoid peak travel chaos.
“Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is constantly seeking opportunities to optimise the travel process. One of the ways in which Schiphol is examining whether passenger comfort can be increased is by allowing passengers to determine themselves when to go to security control,” a spokesperson of Royal Schiphol Group told Lonely Planet.
Dubbed the Personal Security Pass pilot project, travellers can now reserve a spot at a certain time slot through online or the Schiphol app. This means that passengers are guaranteed to pass through security quickly if they turn up on their allocated time.
During the trial period, the airport will dedicate one security checkpoint exclusively for the project. “For each 15 minutes, 30 passengers can get through the checkpoint,” manager of security policy Daan van Vroonhoven told the Sun. “At Disneyland, it is very normal, for years already, to reserve a time slot for a ride or exhibition.” If the pilot project proves successful, the pass will be rolled out for general use. Schiphol Airport is the third busiest airport in Europe after London Heathrow and Paris Charles de Gaulle.
This pilot applies to several flights to Schengen-destinations until Monday 11 December 2017. Passengers travelling between 10 AM and 1:30 PM on these days can use the pass to pass through an entry gate designed specifically for this purpose.
This isn’t the first time Schiphol has tried to do things differently, this year the airport trialed biometric boarding’ project with KLM in the hopes to help travellers board their flight faster using facial recognition technology.
