The canton of Valais in Switzerland is celebrating its 200th anniversary as a member of the Swiss confederation by lighting up 13 alpine peaks across the region on the night of Wednesday 18 March. The project, 13 stars on the summit, will see peaks such as Dent Blanche (4357 metres), Dom (4545 metres) and Taeschorn (4491 metres) lit up using bright flares placed by around 70 mountain guides. Some of the recommended spots for the best views of the illumination show are places in Saas-Fee and the Portes du Soleil ski area. The Matterhorn will not be lit up. Read more: thelocal.ch
