After rolling out a rebranding campaign earlier this week, Alaska Airlines have made some adjustments after receiving criticism from Alaska Native groups.
The company has removed the line “Meet our Eskimo” and replaced it with “Meet the Eskimo,” referring to the Inuit visage painted on the tails of the airline’s fleet of planes. Alaska Native groups voiced concerns on social media over the use of “our,” saying it implied ownership. Others took umbrage with the use of “Eskimo,” which many Inuit peoples see as an offensive, colonial term. Alaska Airlines decided not to change “Eskimo” after it polled Alaska Native focus groups, who said the term wasn’t offensive, although the airline hasn’t released data on those focus groups.
