San Juan del Sur Bay is a popular destination for tourists, but all that traffic led to a surplus of trash hidden beneath the ocean waves.

Over the past two days, Dive Nicaragua and the Diving and Marine Ecology School, both local diving programmes, organised a massive clean-up of the bay – divers have since removed 1.6 tons of refuse, primarily finding plastic items and even the occasional tractor tire used by boats for docking. The initiative, supported by the local government and private businesses, yielded far less trash than the 2010 effort, which pulled over eight tons of trash from the waters.
