Stay in cosy pods and soak in wooden outdoor hot tubs in New Zealand

Nothing beats escaping to nature for some much needed headspace. And for travellers seeking a mix of rustic, unspoilt charm and relaxation with a touch of luxury, Tu Wepu Intrepid Pods in New Zealand may be the perfect choice for an overnight stay.

Located one hour from Christchurch, the pods are perched above a tranquil bay on Canterbury’s Banks Peninsula, and lie approximately 20 minutes on foot from the nearest road. In the midst of a working cattle farm that dates back to 1843, guests can sleep in luxury beds in contemporary and comfortable pods that come with solar-powered lighting and Wi-Fi, followed by a soak in a private outdoor hot tub.

Run by Kate and Richie Bocock, the idea to create unique accommodation on the site was inspired by the beauty of the surrounding area. “We had the idea when we were working on the farm one day, at the top of the property, where the views are magnificent. We then started exploring what type of accommodation might suit the environment, and how we should go about this. There is a pod builder in Methven that we approached, and we decided to go for it,” Kate Bocock told Lonely Planet Travel News.

The pods have been strategically placed to take advantage of the views, and are completely private. Each pod comes with a stainless steel, wood-fired hot tub for visitors to relax in, as well as fire pits that are available to use in the winter-time and kitchen facilities that allow for al fresco cooking and dining. Guests are also encouraged to walk the rustic natural surroundings to get a feel for the environment that they have immersed themselves in.

“Guests always leave with a massive smile on their face, and that’s the satisfaction that we get from hosting them. They are blown away by the native birdsong, and the natural environment that they have found themselves in. It’s a busy, modern world, but this experience suits people who are adventurous, romantic, know how to take care of a fire, and cook a steak,” Kate said.

Rates start at NZ$350 (US$250) for one night, with the price dropping to NZ$300 (US$217) for each night after that, and the accommodation can be booked through Glamping Hub, Booking.com and Airbnb. A hamper costing NZ$100 is also available that contains local produce, such as Te Wepu-farmed meat and wine from the region.

More information on the sleeping pods is available at the official Te Wepu website.
