Sports & nature
Chances for activities in Rethymno vary. In the beach places on the northern side of Rethymno, there are some diving centres that offer courses, rent equipment and organize diving trips to interesting spots, like old wrecks and reefs. Another popular activity in Rethymno is hiking, especially in autumn and spring when the weather is not very hot. The inland of Rethymnon provides nice places for hiking and trails pass through impressive gorges, ancient sites and authentic villages.
The nightlife in Rethymnon is particularly vivid in Rethymnon Town and the few tourist places around the town, on the northern side of the prefecture. A great variety of cafe-bars are found in the harbor front of the Town. They usually stay open until after midnight. The summer clubs of Rethymno are also plenty with different music styles for all tastes like pop, house, Latin and others. For a more peaceful night out, enjoy a long dinner in the many taverns around the prefecture, accompanied with local wine or raki.
Culture and history info
The long history of Rethymno is traced back to the Neolithic years where a plethora of archaeological findings including coins, signs and writings of ancient historians witness the inhabitance of fishermen in Gerani Cave. During the Minoan period, Rethymno and the rest of Cretan cities flourished greatly on an economical and cultural level. From the 12th to the 11th century BC, the Minoan civilization developed rapidly in trade and culture.
