A new mobile glamping cabin in Northern Finland will take travellers out into the remote wilderness of the Arctic Circle to see the Northern Lights from a comfortable bed.

The new mobile hotel rooms can move to help visitors get the best view of the Northern Lights through the clear viewing roof. They can be put in the ideal spot for watching the lights, and once the winter ice has thawed, they will be relocated to a new spot for the following season. The moveable cabins are currently located about six kilometres east of Kilpisjärvi, Finland and can be booked through Off the Map Travel until mid-April. They will reopen again in January 2019.

The cabins are 2.5 metres by 4.5 metres and feature a wide bed from which you can watch the sky, a table, dry toilet and a gas heater with thermostat. Should you want to brave the outdoors, there will be snowshoes and kicksleds that guests can use to explore the area.

“The wilderness surrounding Kilpisjärvi is known for its remote and uninterrupted Arctic tundra,” said Jonny Cooper, founder of Off the Map Travel and Arctic travel expert, in a statement. “Away from any manmade light pollution, it is here that that the wilderness camp is placed for the winter, giving guests the best possible opportunity to experience the Northern Lights and simply enjoy the silence of the Arctic plains”.

There are three rooms available to book and each fits two people. A guide will take guests to their room by snowmobile at 6pm, before teaching them to make a campfire and grill local sausages. After, they will be left to enjoy the Northern Lights and the wilderness.

It’s a perfect spot for anyone hoping to catch a glimpse of the often-elusive lights, as the Off the Map Travel says that statistically, the area has more clear night skies and more Northern Lights activity than any other spot in Finland. If the sky is clear, guests can expect to have more than a 70% chance of seeing the magical colours light up the sky.

While travel itineraries with the travel company can be customized, a three-night, four-day itinerary costs from £1599 (US$2238) per-person based on two adults, which includes transport from the airport in Tromso, two nights in a log chalet and one in the new glamping cabin, all meals included.
